Mencom Introduces Tight but Flexible Modular KADL Cable Entry System at IMTS 2018
– Booth # 134752 in IAMD USA – East Building, Level 3

The KADL Cable Entry System provides an easy to use, highly flexible, economical way to maintain enclosure integrity while still using pre-terminated cables and connectors. This KADL cable entry system allows for the insertion and sealing of pre-assembled cables with connectors into enclosures, machines and control cabinets. They can easily be expanded and adjusted, thanks to its unique modular design, providing high flexibility for various applications.

The modular structure allows a step-by-step, one click installation, and can accommodate from as little as 1 to as many as 25 cables into a housing wall. With only 18 grommets, a clamping range of 3mm to 32.5mm can be achieved. The grommets are ordered separately as accessories depending on various application requirements. No mounting screws are necessary when the thickness of the wall is between 1.5mm and 2.0mm. If the thickness is greater than 2mm the cable entry plate can be simply attached with screws.

The KADL frame is made of a robust Polyamide and provides IP65 rating when the installation is completed.

Below are some applications where KADL series can be utilized.

– Mechanical and plant engineering
– Measuring and control technology
– Drive engineering
– Mobile studio- and lighting technology
– Wind power and solar energy technology
– Electrical installation

Mencom Announces Easy, Flexible and Reliable Modbus Gateways for Seamless Conversions in Harsh Environments

Posted on May 23rd, 2018

Modbus GatewaySince its debut, Modbus has become one of the most popular protocols used worldwide. Modbus RTU (through serial connection) and Modbus TCP (through Ethernet networks) are often used in the crucial parts of industrial automation, substation automation, and building automation. Due to the slow migration of communication standard from serial-based (RS-232, RS-485, and RS-422) devices to Ethernet-based devices, however, a demand has been created for smart converters.

From simple to complex applications, Mencom offers a wide variety of Modbus series solutions. They are available from one to sixteen serial ports and feature several mounting options, such as DIN-rail, Field Mount, or Rack-Mount. The Entry-level products provide seamless conversion from Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP and they require almost no configuring. The wireless version also enables high-speed wireless communication for Modbus protocol. Mencom Modbus Series are enhanced with harsh environment operational capability, vibration resistance, power or serial port isolation for equipment and device protection, redundant power supplies, and many more special options. In addition to excellent reliability, enhanced responsiveness can be achieved through redundancy and concentrator function for the most critical applications.

Concentrator Function

A data concentrator function is a proprietary mechanism to enhance responsiveness on Mencom Advanced/Industrial Modbus Gateways. The Modbus Gateway has to wait for a master device’s request, then it has to convert and relay information to a field device. Once a response is returned from the field device, the response is then converted and relayed back to the master device. This process generally results in significant negative impacts on the responsiveness. Instead, Mencom Advanced Modbus Gateways with the data concentrator function automatically continue to poll IEDs at a specified interval and store the data in their internal memory waiting for master device’s requests. Once the request arrived, the return data will be retrieved from the internal memory of the Modbus Gateways. This tailored process provides several positive implications on the system performance: the master device may need just one connection and one query to get all data at once, the response time will be dramatically reduced, and many different data structures can be accessed on demand.

Redundancy Function

Mencom Advanced/Industrial Modbus Concentrators offer an additional redundancy feature that can be implemented via the proprietary communication protocol. For instance, a number of IEDs are connected in multiple chains through serial ports where the primary Modbus gateway and the secondary Modbus gateway are connected on each end of the chains, and Ethernet links with fiber or copper connections are installed between the primary gateway and the second gateway. Both primary and secondary gateways may be further connected to a master through different redundant rings.
The secondary gateway usually performs receiving and recording the data under normal circumstances. In the event of a network breakdown, however, one of the reachable gateways will take over the communication with the master, relay back the link to the master together and notify a link failure message. On the other hand, if there is a serial link failure, the secondary gateway will autonomously poll the missing data and update the primary gateway memory ensuring the data relayed to master is complete. This feature helps the network significantly reduce down-times and provides extra protection for the utility or the substation from accidental or intentional failure coming from the outside of the system.

Mencom Introduces Industrial Wireless Access Point to Protect Sensitive Data on the Manufacturing Floors

Posted on February 14th, 2018

The manufacturing industries and the utilities have been getting more automated, delocalized and more complex since the introduction of modern information technologies. The advanced smart grid system as an automated and distributed energy delivery network exemplifies how the complex network infrastructure works through connecting individual smart applications to operate traditional and modern renewable power plants together.

Since the cost of leased lines is lofty and some locations are not even accessible by traditional methods such as wired broadband or fiber backbone, dedicated and private communication lines to every device are no longer viable options to build such a large network. Therefore, these large network connections should be established either through the public Internet where broadband internet access is available or through the cellular wireless network so that end-users can easily access and control devices at a minimum cost.

These networks, however, are prone to encounter possible security issues during the data transfer. If sensitive data that was conventionally relayed over the private network is transferred over a public network without encryption, the system becomes vulnerable to various threats and can be compromised by malicious activities such as network penetration, unauthorized control, interception, and eavesdropping.

In order to secure the sensitive data, Mencom offers Industrial Wireless Access Points providing a reliable, robust, rugged, and cost-effective solutions to industrial applications that require a wireless connectivity. They are suitable for a wide array of applications and withstand harsh conditions typically found in the harsh manufacturing environment. In addition, a state of the art encryption and the ability to create a virtual network among wireless clients are integrated so that communications between clients can be easily and intuitively controlled while imposing restrictions on data and excluding malware can be done at the same time. Equipped with a powerful 2 x2 MIMO Radio interface supporting IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz selectable bands, built-in DIN-Rail mount, these Wireless Access Points run in multiple modes such as – access point(AP) mode, wireless distribution bridge (WDS) mode or access point client operation mode.

Mencom Wireless Access Point embodies a strong wireless network manager to ensure the delivery of optimum performance in the network. WPS and Wi-Fi Direct technology options are also available to connect Wi-Fi easier and deliver an industry-wide peer-to-peer solution based on broadly deployed Wi-Fi technologies. These devices are designed to be fully operational between -20 and +60 °C.
